The Bible says in Psalm 133:1-3, “Behold, how
good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity![2] It
is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even
Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;[3] As the
dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for
there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.” Verse one is a great verse about the
importance of unity among believers. Jesus told Christians to be united in
love. Jesus said, “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have
love one to another.” Jesus prayed to the Father in John 17:21-23, “That they
all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may
be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.[22] And the glory which thou gavest
me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:[23] I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in
one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them,
as thou hast loved me.” One of the
worse things that can happen to a congregation is a lack of unity caused by a
lack of love. Perhaps there is no greater shame than divisions among
Christians. We are brothers and sisters in Christ. We are members of the only
family that will exist forever. Jesus wants us to love one another.
