The Bible says in Psalm 124:1-8, “ If it had not been the LORD who was
on our side, now may Israel say;[2] If it had not been the LORD who was
on our side, when men rose up against us:[3] Then they had swallowed us
up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us:[4] Then the waters
had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul:[5] Then the proud
waters had gone over our soul.[6] Blessed be the LORD, who hath not
given us as a prey to their teeth.[7] Our soul is escaped as a bird out
of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.[8]
Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.” In this Psalm the believer
recognizes how much the Lord has helped him. God constantly protects us.
Unfortunately, there is a lot of hatred in this world. If you serve Jesus, you
will have enemies. But one of the many benefits of knowing Christ as Savior is
that He will protect you as long as He has something for you to do for Him in
this life. As it says in verse eight, He created “heaven and
earth” by His mighty power, and so He can certainly use His power to
protect us from mere humans.
This Psalm also means that only the
Lord can help us. And that means that it is in vain to go to anyone else for
help. It also means that we have no hope of winning the victory over the world,
the flesh, and the devil without the Lord Jesus That is why it says in Ephesians
6V10, “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of
his might.”
