The Bible says in Hosea 2:23, “And I will
sow her unto me in the earth; and I will have mercy upon her that had not
obtained mercy; and I will say to them which were not my people, Thou art my
people; and they shall say, Thou art my God.” This is a verse that
looks towards the future. God has a plan, and therefore, He is always looking
towards the future. Because of His great love, God’s plan always involves His
mercy. That is why Jesus came into the world to die on the cross: so that God’s
mercy could be offered to everyone, even the greatest of sinners. When God
said, “I will have mercy upon her that had
not obtained mercy,” He was talking about
The Bible says in Hosea 3:1-5, “Then said
the LORD unto me, Go yet, love a woman beloved of her friend, yet an
adulteress, according to the love of the LORD toward the children of Israel,
who look to other gods, and love flagons of wine.[2] So I bought her to
me for fifteen pieces of silver, and for an homer of barley, and an half homer
of barley:[3] And I said unto her, Thou shalt abide for me many days;
thou shalt not play the harlot, and thou shalt not be for another man: so will
I also be for thee.[4] For the children of Israel shall abide many days
without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an
image, and without an ephod, and without teraphim:[5] Afterward shall
the children of Israel return, and seek the LORD their God, and David their
king; and shall fear the LORD and his goodness in the latter days.”
Once again we are told about Hosea’s wife who was a harlot, and how God used
that fact to symbolize to the nation of
God has a long-term plan for everyone
in order to accomplish what He is trying to accomplish in their lives. As a
matter of fact the most important thing going on in your life is what God is
doing in it in order to bring you to Christ, and after that to make you more
like Jesus. It says in Philippians 2:13, “For it is God which worketh in you
both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” God has not given up
on you. It might take a long time, but He has plenty of time. God knew that it
was going to take a long time to get
The Bible says in Hosea 4:1-6, “Hear the
word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with
the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor
knowledge of God in the land.[2] By swearing, and lying, and killing,
and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth
blood.[3] Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth
therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of
heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.[4] Yet let
no man strive, nor reprove another: for thy people are as they that strive with
the priest.[5] Therefore shalt thou fall in the day, and the prophet
also shall fall with thee in the night, and I will destroy thy mother.[6]
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected
knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing
thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.”
What we see in these verses are several truths: 1. What was wrong with
The first thing mentioned about
The third thing mentioned about
The nation of
After listing the four commandments
that they had been violating, it says in Hosea 4:2, “they break
out, and blood toucheth blood.” The phrase “they break out” refers in
this context to committing violent acts. The phrase “blood
toucheth blood” means that one violent and bloody crime scene touches the next
one. There are so many acts of such violence that there is a continuous flow of
them.
With such sin, and such violence, and
such ungodliness going on in a country, of course there will be an impact even
on the land and the animals. It says in Hosea 4:3, “Therefore
shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with
the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the
sea also shall be taken away.” Sin will always have its bad consequences. It
will even harm the land and the animals. If you love the environment and want
to take care of it, then repent of your sins and turn to Jesus and encourage
others to do the same. Without such repentance even the land shall “mourn.”
Selfish (sinful) human beings will not properly take care of the land or the
animals that live on it.
Hosea 4:5 is another verse that
reveals the terrible destruction that would result from a nation turning away
from God. It says, “Therefore shalt thou fall in the day, and the prophet also shall
fall with thee in the night, and I will destroy thy mother.” The
consequences of the sins will affect everyone. Just ask a parent who has a
grown child who has gone astray and maybe is sitting in a prison cell some
where, or in some other way has reaped what they have sown. When sin takes its
full course and has brought its greatest result the best people of the land
will also suffer, symbolized by mentioning “the prophet” and by mentioning “thy
mother.”
It is interesting that Hosea 4:4 says,
“Yet
let no man strive, nor reprove another.” Since everyone is a sinner, who can
condemn another? One of the ways to get on the right track with God is to stop
looking at others and start looking at yourself honestly. That is exactly what
Jesus was talking about when He said in Matthew 7:1-5, “Judge not,
that ye be not judged.[2] For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be
judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.[3]
And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest
not the beam that is in thine own eye?[4] Or how wilt thou say to thy
brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in
thine own eye?[5] Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine
own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy
brother's eye.” Another characteristic of a sinful society is that people
will be pointing fingers at each other instead of at themselves.
In Hosea 4:5-6 is an emphasis on the
destruction that is pronounced against
