Exodus 14:5
The Lord said in Exodus 14:5-9, And it was told the king of Egypt
that the people fled: and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was turned
against the people, and they said, Why have we done
this, that we have let Israel
go from serving us? And he made ready his chariot, and took his people with
him: And he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt,
and captains over every one of them. And the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh
king of Egypt, and he
pursued after the children of Israel:
and the children of Israel
went out with an high hand. But the Egyptians pursued
after them, all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, and his horsemen, and his
army, and overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pi-hahiroth, before Baal-zephon. Of course, Pharaoh never did have a change
of heart, and so he continued to devise some plan against the Israelites. This
time Pharaoh got into his chariot and led the chariots of Egypt against
the Israelites. This fact makes us think that when all of the chariots were
engulfed and the Egyptian soldiers drowned in the waters of the Red Sea that Pharaoh was one of them. Such a defeat was
caused by the hardness of Pharaohs heart.
As Christians live in this world, we know that
many of the unspiritual people will have hard hearts against us. But what we
see in what happened to Pharaoh is that God allows the hard hearts, and God
will use the hard hearts to accomplish His will.
And God will punish the hard hearts in His way and in His time. God knows. We
can put our trust in the Lord Jesus. The good Shepherd protects the sheep.
The Bible says in Exodus 14:10-14, And when Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the
Egyptians marched after them; and they were sore afraid: and the children of Israel
cried out unto the LORD. And they said unto Moses, Because
there were no graves in Egypt,
hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt
thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt? Is not this the word that we
did tell thee in Egypt,
saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians?
For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die
in the wilderness. And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still,
and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the
Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.
The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace. The
children of Israel
had the normal human reaction upon knowing that the Egyptian army was coming
against them: they were afraid and they expected to die. Moses had the normal
spiritual reaction for a person who is full of faith: he had no fear and he was
confident that the Lord would save them. Moses said to the people in Exodus
14:13, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the
salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day. Notice also
that Moses said in Exodus 14:14, The Lord shall
fight for you. The Israelites were in a situation where they could do
nothing, and so the Lord did everything. Maybe the next time that you are in a
very difficult situation you should do nothing, but trust the Lord Jesus and
see what He will do. Maybe you will not fight for
yourself so much, if you really believe like Moses that the Lord shall fight
for you.
Concerning the great and wonderful and
unforgettable event of the parting of the Red Sea,
the Bible says in Exodus 14:15-31, And the LORD
said unto Moses, Wherefore criest
thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel,
that they go forward: But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over
the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground
through the midst of the sea. And I, behold, I will harden the hearts of the
Egyptians, and they shall follow them: and I will get me honour
upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.
And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I have gotten me honour upon Pharaoh, upon his chariots, and upon his
horsemen. And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed
and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face,
and stood behind them: And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the
camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by
night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night. And
Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go
back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the
waters were divided. And the children of Israel went into the midst of the
sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right
hand, and on their left. And the Egyptians pursued, and went in after them to
the midst of the sea, even all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, and his
horsemen. And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto
the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and
troubled the host of the Egyptians, And took off their chariot wheels, that
they drave them heavily: so that the Egyptians said,
Let us flee from the face of Israel; for the LORD fighteth
for them against the Egyptians. And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine
hand over the sea, that the waters may come again upon the Egyptians, upon
their chariots, and upon their horsemen. And Moses stretched forth his hand
over the sea, and the sea returned to his strength when the morning appeared;
and the Egyptians fled against it; and the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the
midst of the sea. And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the
horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them; there
remained not so much as one of them. But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the
midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and
on their left. Thus the LORD saved Israel
that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon
the sea shore. And Israel
saw that great work which the LORD did upon the Egyptians: and the people
feared the LORD, and believed the LORD, and his servant Moses.
Notice that it says in Exodus 14:19-20, And the angel of God, which went before the camp of
Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from
before their face, and stood behind them: And it came between the camp of the
Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but
it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all
the night. The very thing that gave light, and guidance, and help to
the believers caused darkness and stumbling for the unbelievers. That is
exactly the way that the Lord has set up the principle of truth. The truth of
Christ goes forward, and the truth shines as a wonderful beacon to guide the
lives of those who believe, but for those who do not believe, the truth is dark
and incomprehensible. The Bible says in Second Corinthians 4:3-4, But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are
lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which
believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image
of God, should shine unto them. Paul also wrote in Second Corinthians
4:6, For God, who commanded the light to shine out
of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of
the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. Jesus said in Luke 8:10,
And he said, Unto you it
is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God:
but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they
might not understand.
We remember the plagues that God brought upon the land of Egypt. Then the children of Israel were delivered from Egypt. And finally they were saved
by means of a tremendous miracle. The enemies who
hated them, the Egyptians, were destroyed. These events in many ways are symbolic
of similar events that will take place at the end of the age. Jesus has a plan
to take His children out of this world. One of the events of the last days is
called the rapture, when all of the believers in Jesus are miraculously delivered
from this world of woe and taken to heaven. The rapture is described in First
Thessalonians 4:16-18, For the Lord himself shall
descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the
trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive
and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the
Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one
another with these words.
Concerning the plagues of the last days, much is
said in the book of Revelation. For example, it says in Revelation 8:7-13, The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire
mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of
trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up. And the second angel
sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the
sea: and the third part of the sea became blood; And the third part of the
creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the
ships were destroyed. And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star
from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the
rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; And the name of the star is called
Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died
of the waters, because they were made bitter. And the fourth angel sounded, and
the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the
third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day
shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise. And I beheld, and
heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice,
Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by
reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to
sound!
Concerning the destruction of the unbelievers in
the last days, first it says in Revelation 6:9-10, And
when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that
were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held: And they
cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not
judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth? And
then when Jesus returns to the earth, it says in Revelation 19:19-21, And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and
their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse,
and against his army. And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet
that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received
the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast
alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. And the remnant were slain
with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of
his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.
Of course, finally there will be the judgment.
Jesus is the Judge. It says in Revelation 20:11-15, And
I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth
and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the
dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another
book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of
those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the
sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead
which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And
whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of
fire.
