Psalms 31:6

Psalms 31:6, “I have hated them that regard lying vanities: But I trust in the LORD.” The word “hate” can also be translated enemy. Those that oppose the truth of the Word of God are the enemies of Jesus and His children. The phrase “lying vanities” means wickedness of words or those who do and teach lies; teach things that are contrary to the truth of God’s Word.

Concerning the enemies of the Christian, Jesus said in Matthew 5:44, “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.” Jesus also said in Luke 6:35-36, “But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful

We live in the last days. There is a falling away. One way in which there is a falling away is through the failure of Christians to stay separated from the world, from their enemies, and from those that regard lying vanities. When Psalms speaks of hating those that oppose the truth, it is not teaching to persecute the lost people of the world but it is teaching the principle of separation from the world. Your enemies are going to persecute you. But you should not persecute them. You should separate from them as much as possible.

Philippians 3:18-20 says, “(For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things. For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:)”

The reason to separate from your enemies is because they are the enemies of the cross of Christ. Jesus Christ died on the cross of Calvary for your sins. If you have repented and trusted in Him, then you have obtained the righteousness which is of faith and an eternal life that includes all spiritual blessings in heavenly places. You should not compromise on the truth of the Word of God just to try to get those who are your enemies to treat you nicely.

Salvation is by faith in Christ, and following Christ in this life is by faith. Psalms 31:6 says, “I have hated them that regard lying vanities: But I trust in the LORD.” Those that are the enemies of the truth will do everything they can to influence you to not trust in the lord. I hate those that regard lying vanities because I trust in the LORD.  My enemies have the goal of trying to get me to not trust in God’s promises. Therefore, I separate from them and I keep the word of God in my heart and in my mind.

We live in the last days. There is a falling away. One reason for the falling away from the truth is because of the failure of Christians to stay in unity with one another and to separate from those that regard lying vanities. Second John 1: 5-6 says, “And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another. And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it

One of the greatest lies of the devil which has deceived the church here in the last days is regarding the teaching of love. Unity is not love. Love is that we walk after his commandments. Unity comes through walking after his commandments.  This is one great characteristic of the false religious system of the anti-christ: a unity through the compromising of the truth, and a unity of the world’s religions including a false Christianity. This unity will be a unity not based on the truth of God’s Word but based on the regarding of lying vanities. Even the Pope who heads one of the largest Christian organizations, Catholicism, has taken part in this unity by attempting to support the idea of unity with false religions such as Islam and other religions. This is an example of a false prophet and of a falling away from the truth. There can only be unity through the belief in the truth which begins by repentance of sin to Jesus Christ of Nazareth who died on the cross for the sins of the world and rose from the grave. You cannot have unity with those who deny Jesus Christ as Savior; not if you are a Christian. There is only one God: Jesus Christ. Acts 4:12 says, “Neither is there salvation in any other, for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Any religion or religious teaching that denies that Jesus is the Christ and the only mediator between God and man is a false religion and a false teaching. It is Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of the world. It is Jesus who rose from the grave. It is Jesus who saves men from their sins and gives eternal life.

Psalms 31:6, “I have hated them that regard lying vanities: But I trust in the LORD.” Trust in Jesus. Separate from those who regard lying vanities.  Psalms 31:7 says, “I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities; And hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy: thou hast set my feet in a large room

How wonderful is the righteousness of Christ. And how wonderful is the mercy of God. Because of God’s mercy man can through Christ have the eyes of his understanding opened. All men without Christ are blind spiritually and in their minds can only regard lying vanities. It is because of the mercy of Christ that we are able to understand the truth of the gospel and the spiritual blessings of eternity that are a part of the promises of God to those that repent of their sins to Jesus of Nazareth. How much mercy indeed has been given to those of us who have heard and received in our hearts the word of truth.

Trouble and adversities come to those who trust in Jesus. The words “trouble” and “adversities” can be translated misery and tribulation. This means persecution. Some men never repent of their sins and trust in Jesus simply out of fear of the persecution that might come to them. This is the reason the spiritual forces of evil persecute against the truth and dominate the governmental powers of this world; to prevent men from repenting of their sins and trusting in Jesus. 2 Timothy 3:12 says, “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.”

If your faith in Christ and His promises has grown enough, then you will come to understand that the mercy of God through Christ for His children is always there even in times of persecution in which misery and tribulation are severe. This is why the Apostle Paul said in 2 Corinthians 4:7-11, “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. For we which live are always delivered unto death for Jesus’ sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh.”

I will be glad and rejoice in the mercy of God through Christ who died for me. I have forgiveness of my sins and eternal life in heaven. I have all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ. I have an inheritance incorruptible which fadeth not away because of the mercy of God. These are the things to think about in times of persecution. How wonderful and endless is the mercy of God through Christ to his children because of the righteousness of Christ which is given unto them by grace through faith and not of works.

Psalms 31:7-8 says, “I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities; And hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy: thou hast set my feet in a large room

Sometimes we are delivered from the physical circumstances that the enemies of the cross of Christ would put us in and sometimes we are not. A Christian should always be ready and willing to die for the name of Christ. Spiritually we have overcome the forces of evil and evil men. Once saved always saved. How great is the mercy of God because he, “hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities.” Christ understands our sufferings and persecutions that we are facing as Christians. He is here to guide us and give us the grace to endure. The grace of Christ has no limits for the Christian. The trouble and the adversities that the Christian faces will accomplish things for the glory of Christ and the spread of the gospel. Philippians 3:7-10 says, “yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteous which is of God by faith: That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death

If you love the truth, then you will hate those that regard lying vanities. You will separate from them and you will stay faithful to the Word of God. The love of the truth begins by repentance of sin and trusting in Jesus Christ of Nazareth as Savior.
