Psalms 42:1

“Where Is Thy God?”

Psalms 42:1, “As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, where is thy God?” Jesus said in Revelation 21:6, “And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.” Revelation 22:17 says, “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” The book of Psalms talks a great deal about persecution against the believer in Jesus. One reason there is great persecution and opposition towards those that live by faith in the promises of the Bible is explained in these verses of Psalms 42. You either desire a personal relationship with Christ or you do not. Those that do not desire a personal relationship with Christ will oppose those that do.

One of the key words to notice in these verses of Psalms is the word thirst. Jesus said in John 4:14, “Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” The human body is made up of 70% water. The earth has 7 seas and about 70% of the earth is water. A man can live about 3 days without water. Jesus laid in the grave 3 days before He rose again. Physical water is necessary for physical life in the world. And spiritual water is necessary for spiritual life. What do you thirst after? The lusts of the world? The lusts of the eyes? The pride of life? Or does your soul thirst for the living God? There are many things to thirst after in life. How few there are in this world that ever thirst for the truth of the Word of God or for the righteousness of Christ. When the Spirit of God touches your heart to thirst for the truth and for the righteousness of God which is of faith, hopefully by grace through faith, you are one of the few who do not turn away from Christ.

Notice in these verses that God is called, “The living God.” Also notice in verse 3 that those who do not thirst after God say, “where is thy God?” Psalms 42:2 says, “My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?” In talking about thirsting after God verse 2 says, “When shall I come and appear before God?” The thirst, the desire, is for a personal relationship with Christ. The desire to know God and have fellowship with the Creator of this world, is the thirst being talked about here. The thirst is not for self-righteousness. The desire is not for one’s own glory, or for money, but the thirst is a thirst which begins with a desire for the forgiveness of sins, a thirst that can be quenched only by the one who can forgive sins, the one who died for the sins of the world, Jesus Christ. This is why Jesus said in John 11:25, “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:” I John 5:12 says, “He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.”

Psalms 42:3 says, “My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?” Notice the phrase, “Where is thy God?” This is something a person without faith says. Where is God? We walk by faith not by sight. We walk by faith in the promises of God. This shows the difference between those that thirst after Christ and the righteousness of Christ and those that thirst after the things of this world. A Christian lives by faith. A lost person says, “Where is thy God?” In other words they go through life almost never noticing the wonderful works that God has done and continues to do for them in their lives. There are many blessings in life. James 1:17 says, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”

“Where is thy God?” God is a living God.   Jesus said in Mark 8:36, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Draw night to God and He will draw night to you. Where is thy God? Jesus is everywhere. If you turn to him you will find him. Psalms 42:1-3 says, “As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?”

In talking about God in these verses what is said is that God is the living God. This is a very important truth about God. A lot of things regarding the character of God could be mentioned here but what is mentioned is God is the living God. God is real. God is alive. Jesus died on the cross for the sins of the world and was buried but He rose again the 3rd day. When you think about the phrase the living God perhaps what you should think about most are these two things: God is the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end; and Jesus rose from the grave. These two truths explain the meaning of the living God. This why the last verse of Psalms 41 verse 13 says, “Blessed be the LORD God of Israel from everlasting, and to everlasting. Amen, and Amen.” From everlasting and to everlasting: if God is the beginning and the end then God is alive.

This is the great tragedy of those who do not have faith in the Word of God: they do not understand that God is the Alpha and the Omega, that God is the living God.  And so they say, “Where is thy God?” A very famous statement is the statement, ‘God is dead.’ This statement was made in the late 18th century by A German Philosopher named Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche. Nietzsche and his philosophies greatly influenced Adolf Hitler and also modern Phycology. How important it is to understand that God is the living God. When a person or a society says, “Where is thy God?” That person or society is headed down the wrong path, the path of destruction, the path of the devil.

In talking about the understanding that God is the living God, that Jesus is God, the problem is that those without faith only go by sight. They only go by their physical circumstances and therefore they are chaff blown about in the wind. When the sufferings and blessing of life come their way they say ‘God is dead.’ Tears are something that are often associated with sorry. Psalms 42:3 says, “My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?” When A Christian is in a time of sorrow or trouble or persecution this is what those who are opposed to the truth and those who do not have faith in the Bible do, they say, “Where is thy God?” It can be discouraging; it can be a persecution even for a Christian to be surrounded by those that do not have faith and those that attack the faithfulness of God. But God is faithful because God is the living God. Jesus is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

Psalms 42:1-3 says, “As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me Where is thy God.” Jesus is the water of life. Jesus is the living God. A person who truly thirsts after God will seek a personally relationship with Christ. Such a person will have a sincere love for the Bible, the reading of the Bible, the study of Bible, the listening to the Bible, and a desire for the rightly dividing of the Word of God. Why the Bible? Because it is the Bible that reveals the mind of God and the heart of God? There is no way to be close to God than to repent of your sins and turn to Jesus and learn the Word of God.

Those that say, “Where is thy God?” do not know the promises of God. They do not know that God is the living God. They do not understand the forgiveness of sins and the eternal life that is in Christ. They do not know the righteousness of God which is like the great mountains.

What a blessing it is to know that God is the living God, that Jesus is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, that Jesus not only died for your sins but that He rose again. I Corinthians 15:19-22 says, “If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the first fruits of them that slept. For since by man came death by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.”

Psalms 42:1-3 says, “As the hart panteth after the water brokks, so panteth m soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?” In Psalms chapter 42 the phrase “Where is thy God?” is used twice. This type of a response by those that oppose the truth is really an attack on a Christian’s faith. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. Anytime you are around someone who does not have faith in the promises of God they will always oppose your faith in Christ. There is forgiveness of sins and eternal life in Christ because God is the living God. Where is God? God is everywhere? There is only one place God is not at, the fires of hell. Turn from your sins and turn to Jesus and receive eternal life.
