“I Am The Light
Of The World”
Jesus said I am the light of the world.
I John 1:5, “This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare
unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.”
The world needs light, the light of
Jesus. Light represents truth. We live in a world filled with lies. Governments
lie. News medias lie, social media lies, Hollywood lies, the school systems
lie, and people lie. The lies of the devil in a way fill and control this
world. This is why we need the light of Jesus.
Jesus is the light. Jesus is the source
of all truth. In other words truth comes from God and from His Word. If you
want truth, if you want light, you must come to Jesus when he comes to you.
John 11:10, “But if a man walk in the
night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.” In other words this is
why people sin because they are not walking in the truth. Anytime you sin you
are not walking in the light. It is very easy to use the physical world and the
way it works concerning light and darkness to understand spiritual light and
spiritual darkness. The one parallels the other. If you walk about in darkness
you are going to stumble and fall because you cannot see your surroundings. You
might stumble over a tree stump or fall into a pit. It is like this
spiritually. As you go through the journey of life, if your mind and your heart
is not filled with truth then when you make decisions as you face different circumstances
you are going to make sinful decisions. The devil roams about as a roaring lion
seek him whom he may devour. And he will devour those who walk in darkness.
The philosophies of the world will tell
you that the end justifies the means and the philosophies of the world will
tell you that right and wrong is not black and white but is grey and changes
depending on circumstances, but right and wrong is written in stone.
As I just said, the world is filled
with the lies of the devil. These lies control governments, social media,
public education systems, business organizations, the entertainment industries
of the world. The systems of this world are not based on the Word of God: they
are based on the thinking and philosophies of men and of the devil.
If you want to be free of these things,
then you need Jesus because Jesus is the light of the world. The Word was made
flesh and dwelt among us. Jesus is the living Word and we also have the written
Word.
Even though the world is filled with
lies from one perspective we can say that the truth of God has gone out into
the entire world. Romans 10:17-18,
“Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. But say, Have they not
heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto
the ends of the world.”
About two thousand years ago Jesus died
on the cross for our sins and then rose from the grave defeating death. Since
that time the kingdom of God has been preached. Colossians 1:23 says, “to every
creature which is under heaven.” Jesus is the light of the world and despite
the power of the devil and the lies of the systems of this world which the
devil controls, God’s truth is marching on. God’s Word always accomplishes that
which he purposes.
Jesus said in John 9:5, “As long as I
am in the world, I am the light of the world.” We know that Jesus was on this
earth for 33 years before he died on the cross and then he rose from the grave
and ascended to heaven 40 days later.
But Jesus is still in the world today. He is with us in Spirit.
The Bible says in John 1:4-5, “In him
was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness;
and the darkness comprehended it not.” When we put these two verses together
John 8:12 where Jesus said, “I am the light of the world,” and John 1:4 which
says “In him was life; and the life was the light of men.” We learn that Jesus’
life on this earth is very important. Jesus lived a life without sin. Jesus is
holy. That is something only God can do. No man in this life has gone through
all of life from birth to death, sinless, except Jesus Christ. That is because
Jesus is God.
In him was life; and the life was the
light of men. Life comes from God. And Jesus’ life is the perfect testimony to
the truth. It is no wonder the book of Revelation calls Jesus the faithful
witness. It is no wonder Jesus is the faithful witness because Jesus is the
light of the world. Jesus witnesses to us with his Word. Jesus witnesses to us
with his 33 years on this earth and his death on the cross.
Now notice something very interesting
that Jesus said in Matthew 5:14, “Ye are
the light of the world.” Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.” If God is
the light of the world, then how are we the light of the world? It is very
simple. When a person is saved the Holy Spirit comes to dwell inside them.
Jesus said abide in me and I in you. Just as Jesus was the light of this world,
we as Christians are the light of this world. We are ambassador’s for Christ.
In a way you could say we are doing the
same work that Jesus did. Following the same road that he followed. Walking in
his footsteps. That is why Jesus said to pick up your cross daily and follow
him. Jesus had a cross. We each have a cross. Jesus is the light of the world.
We are the light of the world.
John 8:12 says, “Then spake Jesus again
unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not
walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
Jesus is the light of the world. Even
though the darkness of sin covers the world and the hearts of men, Jesus is
everywhere omnipresent and in the hearts of Christians lighting this world and
sending out his truth. If you follow Jesus, you will not walk in darkness, but
shall have the light of life.
Human beings tend to compare themselves
to each other and compete with one another. But if you were to take your life
and compare it to Jesus’ life on this earth there is no comparison because
Jesus is God. You will begin to realize how sinful you are and how holy God is.
What is amazing about God as the Creator and as the All-powerful God who owns
the cattle on a thousand hills and who is the Author of Salvation is that God
is willing to let others be part of His Gospel. You can walk the road to the
cross. Jesus bore a cross and you can bear a cross. Jesus is the light of the
world and you can be the light of the world if you pick up your cross daily and
follow him.
In the darkness men fear, in the night
men cower and are defeated by sin. But if you walk in the light, you will be
with Jesus. There is no better friend to love you, to guide you, to provide for
you, to protect you, to have mercy upon you, and to forgive you time and time
again when you fail. And to reward you one day in heaven with those great
eternal rewards if you serve Christ faithfully.
John 8:12 says, “Then spake Jesus again

walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
We all understand what light is. Light
comes from the sun. It shines in the daytime and keeps the night away. In the
day time in the light, is when people work and live their lives. In the night
is when people are drunken and riotous. Because of science we understand much
better how light gives life. Light is necessary for trees to undergo
photosynthesis and create oxygen for us to breath. And the word of God, both
the written Word and the living Word, is our light which we must intake to have
that close sensitivity to the Spirit of God.
Jesus is the light of the world. Do you
feel like your life has been lost? Is life confusing for you? Do you wonder
what the meaning of life is? Are you greatly troubled about tragedies and
sorrows that come your way and evil things that people do to hurt you? Do you
not understand why you suffer in life the way that you do? If you come to Jesus,
the seas of life will no longer be dark waters in which you drown and the
storms of life which pass by you with their great destructions will have
meaning and purpose through following the will of God.
Jesus said I am the light of the world
and if I be lifted up, will draw all men unto me. The only begotten son of God
who set aside his glory and humbled himself and was found in fashion as man was
lifted up on the cross to which he was nailed. God is love. God is light and in
him is no darkness at all.
In some way all men are drawn to the
cross where Jesus died. For some the cross is a mystery. For others the cross
is a place of truth. For lost people the cross is something to fear and to
despise: something that they do not understand.
For Jesus the cross was a place of
suffering where he became sin for us and was separated from God the Father bearing
our sins in his own body on that tree. But for the Christian the cross is a
place of peace and safety from the evils of this world.
If you could know only one thing in
life it should be this, that Jesus is the light of the world and through him
men might find eternal life. If you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior
then you can do so today, you can know him right now. All you have to do is
repent and believe the gospel.
The world is filled with darkness. And
the people of this world wander about confused about life, sinning and not even
understanding why they suffer the consequences for their sins that they do.
Sometimes some of us who have been saved so long a time forget what it is like
to walk this life without God. To have a mind filled with darkness and a heart
filled with sin is a terrible thing, to spend one day of life without God is
almost as a great a suffering as hell. Have pity on the lost and be the light
of the world. Be the light of the world by letting the light of Jesus shine
through you.
