Psalms 50:1

“God Hath Shined”

Psalms 50:1-3 says, “The mighty God, even the LORD hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof. Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined. Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about.

The mighty God, even the LORD hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof. God is Almighty there is none more powerful because the lord Jesus Christ is the all powerful mighty God. This means that with God all things are possible.

In mentioning the mighty God what is said is that God has spoken and called the earth. What does it mean to call the earth? It is much the same as God calling a person to something. God is the Creator and God created this earth. He set a purpose, a plan, a function for this planet and 24 hours a day from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof the earth spins around the sun proving a home for man. That is the purpose of the earth a place for man to live and dwell in this vast universe of uninhabitable planets. God has called the earth.

God has also called man. The difference is the earth does exactly what God has called it to do man does not. Man has sinned and rebelled against God. Has God called you?

Acts 17:28-31 says,  For in Him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring. Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device. And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men everywhere to repent: Because He hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom He hath ordained; whereof He hath given assurance unto all men, in that He hath raised Him from the dead.

It is a great and gracious thing to be called of God. Called unto eternal life and called unto forgiveness of sins. Many are called but few are chosen Jesus said.  God reaches out and calls all men with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Psalms 50:2 says that, “God hath shinned.” To shine means to shew forth. Out of Zion God hath shinned. In other words the truth about God was revealed when Jesus came to this earth and spent 33 years 3 of years publicly teaching the word of God and then Jesus died on a cross for your sins and min. God hath shinned; He hath shinned on the cross of Calvary.

Psalms 50:3 says, “Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before Him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him.” Fire speaks of judgment. Notice that concerning judgment it says God shall not keep silence. When the innocent and sinless Jesus was on this earth and stood accused of crimes he had not committed he kept silent. But when Christ returns he will not keep silent but will return in judgment of this world.

Notice the order of things mentioned here in Psalms 50:1-3: God spake, God shinned, God shall come. This reveals God is in control. God has a plan and that plan is coming to pass exactly has God has intended for it to do. God planned out the creation of the world, God planned out Jesus coming born of a virgin to die on the cross for the sins of man, and God has planned out the return of Christ and the judgment that will accompany it.

The great events of human history always centre around God and what God is doing. The next great event of human history will not be men landing on mars or some other fantastic feat but the next great event of human history is the return of Christ. God shall come, and shall not keep silent.

The rest of Psalms 50 focuses on the judgment of God. Psalms 50:4-5 says,  He shall call to the heavens, from above, and to the earth, that he may judge His people. Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.”

In talking about judgment the first thing mentioned is the judgment of the believers. Yes unbelievers will be judged for their sins and believers will be judged too. 2 Corinthians 5:10 says,  For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

God shall come and shall not keep silent. The next great event in human history is Christ’s return. Christ comes quickly. Now God hath shinned in sending His only begotten son to defeat the power of the grave and God hath called just as surely as God hath called the earth God hath called you to turn from your sins unto life eternal by faith in the name of Jesus Christ.
